John is the President & CEO of The Viscardi Center, a network of non-profit organisations that provides a lifespan of services that educate, employ and empower children and adults with disabilities, based in Albertson, NY. As a person with a disability who uses four prostheses, John inspires others to realise their potential through knowledge, experience, vision, personality, and persistence. He graduated from Washburn University School of Law in 1974; they then awarded him an Honorary Doctorate of Law in 2003.

In March 2006, he received the Henry B. Betts Award, widely regarded as America’s highest honor for disability leadership and service.

John has partnered with, worked for and served as Board Member/Chair or CEO of the leading disability and nonprofit organisations such as: United Cerebral Palsy Associations, Very Special Arts, HalfthePlanet Foundation, Independent Sector, The Abilities Fund Inc., Disability Service Providers of America, Easter Seals, Goodwill Industries of America, U.S. Business Leadership Network, and the U.S. International Council on Disabilities.

John Kemp

In 1995, John co-founded the American Association of People with Disabilities. In 2001, he became a partner in the Washington, DC Law Firm of Powers, Pyles, Sutter & Verville, P.C., where he developed an active federal legislative and lobbying practice.

In December 2014, John received the 2014 Dole Leadership Prize at the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas. He was the first disability leader to receive the distinction and personally selected by former Senator Robert Dole. John joined a prestigious group of international recipients that includes Nelson Mandela and former President George H.W. Bush.
